Otosclerosis is a disorder of bone that affects human beings only and involves the otic capsule (bony labyrinth) and primarily the stapes bone of the middle ear. It is the slow progressive fixation of the stapes bone in the oval window which usually causes the clinical symptoms to become noticed in the form of a conductive hearing loss.

Typical audiogram indicating otosclerosis is indicated by higher hearing threshold at 2000 Hz, in bone conduction. pre-operative audiogram, the first post-operative audiogram (from 15 days to one month after surgery) and the last post-operative audiogram FIG. 1 Obliterative otosclerosis (the oval window niche is invaded by exuberant otosclerotic foci and the margins of the oval window cannot be located). Otosclerosis and chronic otoitis  Otosclerosis is a form of abnormal bone growth within the middle ear that causes progressive hearing loss. The sense of balance may also be impaired. The audiologic manifestations of otosclerosis are as distinctive as they are varied . Sometimes, in an audiogram with a drop in bone-conduction thresholds at 2 kHz, a “notch” is noted describing a decrease in cochlear sensitivity. Otosclerosis is a type of hearing loss involving the middle ear.
